Muncie

Muncie, Indiana

Muncie, IN

Located in the heart of Indiana, just to the northeast of Indianapolis, is the town of Muncie. While this city of about 70,000 people may seem like your average small-town, the people here have made significant contributions to modern culture, and the town is a hub for arts, sports, and creativity. If you love sports, you've probably seen the Cardinals play, as the Ball State Athletics Department has 19 Division 1 teams.

The Roots

Muncie's history dates back to the 1700s when the land was home to the Lenape Native Americans, who spoke a language called Munsee. During the gas boom in the 1800s, the Ball brothers came here and became the heart of local development. Their Ball Corporation funded many local businesses, gave back philanthropically, and left its mark on the city. If you're into local lore, it is believed that infamous bank robber John Dillinger traveled through Muncie in July of 1933. Dillinger ultimately didn't rob any banks here because he was worried about a train getting in the way of his escape plans.

Cultural Icons

Muncie is a hub of innovation and has some nationally recognized institutions and creations. Ball State University is one of the most prestigious universities in the country for teaching, architecture, and telecommunications, and is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to sports. The games and matches are a great opportunity for some fun for the whole family.

In the 1980s and 90s, cultural icon Bob Ross was a fixture in living rooms around the country, teaching viewers how to paint with his show "The Joy of Painting." Ross broadcast out of a public television station here, located in the historic L. L. Ball home. Fans of Ross can find merchandise in the Muncie Visitors Bureau.

When the beloved cartoon cat Garfield turned 25 in 2008, Muncie threw him a birthday party. Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield and a native of Delaware County, attended the event and worked with local artists to create what was called Garfield Sculpt. Twenty-five Garfield statues were sponsored by non-profit organizations and decorated, and today, you can still spot some of them.

Much To Do

If you're looking for attractions, you're in for a treat. Art enthusiasts and amateurs alike can enjoy the Griner Gallery at Ball State University, the David Owsley Museum of Art at Ball State University, and the nearby Albany Glass Museum. If you're interested in spending time outside, you can walk, run, or bicycle on the Cardinal Greenway. This 62-mile path is considered Indiana's longest rail-to-trail paved trail and spans five different counties. You'll find the Greenway headquarters at the Historic Wysor Street Depot, where free bike rentals are offered seasonally.
